Marcus Thelen ha studiato biochimica all’Università di Tübingen (DE), ed ha ricevuto il PhD all’Università di Berna. In seguito si è trasferito al Theodor Kocher Institut del Università di Berna dove ha iniziato ad interessarsi di infiammazione e chemochine. Nel 1989 si è unito al gruppo di ricerca di fisiologia cellulare ed immunologia diretto da Alan Aderem presso il dipartimento di Cohn/Steinman alla Rockefeller University di New York. Materia di studio sono stati gli aspetti biochimici della fagocitosi mediati da citochine e endotossine e la trasduzione del segnale legata al riarrangiamento del citoscheletro. Nel 1992 ha ricevuto dal Fondo Nazionale Svizzero per la Ricerca il grant START per supporto alla carriera ed è tornato al Theodor Kocher Institut, dove ha creato un gruppo di ricerca volto allo studio dei meccanismi molecolari della trasduzione del segnale nei leucociti, con particolare attenzione alle via di attivazione dipendenti da chinasi e mediate da recettori per le chemochine. Nel 1994 ha ottenuto la venia docendi dall’Università di Berna ed in seguito nel 2001 è stato eletto professore onorario presso la stessa Università. Nel 2000 si è trasferito a Bellinzona dove ha contribuito alla creazione dell’IRB. Da allora, Marcus Thelen dirige il laboratorio di Trasduzione del Segnale.
